Solo won't back down

MANCHESTER, England (AP) ? U.S. women's soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo didn't back down Monday from her Twitter outburst against NBC analyst Brandi Chastain, saying the tweets were her way of expressing her opinion about the quality of television announcers.

Solo addressed the matter briefly on her 31st birthday during the team's tour of historic Old Trafford stadium, where the Americans will play North Korea on Tuesday. She didn't apologize or express regret, and she answered only one question about the matter, declining to address, among other things, whether a social media rant in the middle of the Olympics was the proper time and means to convey her feelings about broadcasters.

"It's not about what made me unhappy," Solo said. "It's not about one game. I have my beliefs that the best commentators and the best analysts should be analyzing come Olympics, come World Cups, and it's only my opinion. You can take it or leave it, to be honest, so it's my opinion, and I think analysts and commentators should bring energy and excitement and passion for the game, and a lot of knowledge, and I think it's important to help build the game, and I don't think Brandi has that.

"It's just my opinion, and nothing else really matters, to be honest. What matters is tomorrow's game against North Korea, playing at Old Trafford. The team's excited. It's my birthday. I don't really care to answer any other questions about Brandi."

She indeed declined to answer follow-up questions about the matter, including whether she has spoken to Chastain.

Solo's words prompted NBC Sports to weigh in for the first time, releasing a statement in support of its announcer.

"We are thrilled to be able to offer such complete and compelling coverage of the entire Olympic soccer tournament, and Brandi has been doing an outstanding job," NBC spokesman Adam Freifeld said. "We wish the U.S. women's team the best of luck."

Solo railed against Chastain's commentary following the Americans' 3-0 win over Colombia on Saturday, upset over Chastain's criticisms of the team's defensive play. She tweeted that Chastain should "lay off commentating about defending" and goalkeeping "until you get more educated" and "the game has changed from a decade ago."

The outburst led to a meeting with Solo, coach Pia Sundhage and the team captains on Sunday, with the coach expressing concern about how the tweets reflected on the team's image and the need to cut out distractions and focus on the next game. The coach did not tell Solo to stop tweeting.

Solo has never been shy about expressing opinions. Her criticism of then-coach Greg Ryan got her kicked off the 2007 World Cup team. She's also been promoting a memoir that is scheduled for release two days after the Olympics.

Chastain, one of the most accomplished players in U.S. team history, has refused to be drawn into the dispute, saying Monday that she's doing her job as an "honest and objective journalist at the Olympics."

The Solo-Chastain saga has been a diversion from the buildup to a historic match. About 35,000 fans are expected Tuesday, which would be a record for a women's game at the home of Manchester United. The stadium hasn't hosted a women's match since 1989.

"You can see why they talk of all the magic inside. It's pretty amazing," midfielder Megan Rapinoe said after the players spent about 20 minutes taking photos at midfield. "Walking into the changing rooms and seeing all the trophies and legends, it's pretty cool."

The Americans won their first two games and have already clinched a berth in the next round, but they'll want a victory to sustain momentum and get a better draw in the quarterfinals.

Midfielder Shannon Boxx, who injured her right hamstring in the opening win over France, will miss her second consecutive game.

Patiala ki Rao: Society requests to be impleaded ... - Real Estate India

??|?? July 30, 2012 ?? 12:07am ??|Contributed by MANOJa

Chandigarh: Society members have houses in Nayagaon, claim structures built after nod from nagar panchayat
Refuting allegations of illegal construction and encroachment in and around seasonal rivulet Patiala ki rao, a society, whose members have houses in Nayagaon, on Thursday, sought permission from the court to be impleaded as party.

The society has submitted that the revenue record does not show the seasonal rivulet Patiala ki rao and that the constructions made are not illegal. The Society for awareness against injustice, has further stated that houses and other buildings have been constructed only after the Nagar Panchayat, Nayagaon had given clearance to do so. The society, which claims to work to prevent injustice, has been impleaded as respondent since few members of this society have houses in the said area.

It was on May 28 when, taking stock of accusations of illegal construction and enroachment in and around seasonal rivulet Patiala ki rao , the High Court had stayed construction in and around the rivulet which falls in Kharar, Mohali. Also, construction in and around land falling in Nayagaon was stayed by the High Court. The stay on construction will prevail till further orders.

The Court had also issued notices issued to Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA); Deputy Commissioner, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mohali on a petition filed by one Gurbax Ram, resident of Mohali.

The petitioner had sought directions to authorities for removing encroachment from seasonal rivulet namely Patiala Ki Rao passing through villages Nada, Naya Gaon, Karoran etc. in Tehsil Kharar, District SAS Nagar (Mohali). The petitioner had sought action against the encroachers who have encroached upon the rivulet by carving out illegal colony and plots and raising constructions or houses.

The petitioner had submitted that the illegal constructions have blocked the natural course of the rivulet and have also raised stone crate wall to divert or change the natural course of the rivulet and by doing so, have converted the rivulet into a drain.

The petition had alleged that some influential persons and the land mafia active in the area has carved out illegal colony and plots on the said land by removing or levelling hillock (Shivalik Hills) in violation of the said notification since as per the said notification dated August 13, 2010 the said land was delisted with a condition that the state government shall ensure that no commercial activity is permitted on such de-listed land and the said de-listed land shall be used only for bonafide use for agriculture and for sustaining the livelihood of the people or owner of the land.

Country Club, Golf Course Switching Properties?

AMHERST, NY - Amherst Town officials are looking at an interesting potential real estate deal involving golf courses and development.

Councilman Mark Manna says the idea is to trade the town owned Audubon Golf Course for the Westwood Country Club.

The town would operate the Westwood site and its clubhouse on Sheridan and North Forest.

While the current owners of Westwood would take over the Audubon property and develop it as a mixed housing, retail, office, hotel, and restaurant complex with entrances on Millersport Highway.?? Officials tell 2 On Your Side the group is also looking into acquiring the former gun club site on Maple Road as well.

Some residents may be concerned about more development issues, but Manna contends it's a win-win.

" The town would have a turn-key operation for one of the finest municipal golf courses if not in the state, then in the country. Perhaps it would stop losing money on our golf course every year and it would make money or break even. We would have a mixed use development away from Maple Road, alleviating a lot of the residents' concerns from the original gun club proposal. And we would create thousands of good paying jobs," said Manna.

Manna says both properties must be carefully assessed by the town before any possible vote late next year.

2 On Your Side spoke to Amherst Supervisor, Dr. Barry Weinstein who says the town is not looking to just trade property for property.? Dr. Weinstein says he would like to additional incentives before making the switch. Both sides are still negotiating.

Dr. Weinstein says that if the switch does take place, the Town of Amherst would hire a private contractor to run the golf course, and get out of the golfing business.

Climb A Tree likely to thrive in Sis Live Open 550

The Dunne trained blue dog, Climb A Tree, will climb to top of the podium confidently in the Sis Live Open 550 here at Shelbourne Park racecourse on Saturday night, July 28. The high-stakes Open Race over 550 yards is scheduled to start at 22:15 (GMT).

For the sake of the prize money ?500, the three-year-old veteran hound will show his traditional class against five worthy competitors after breaking from the orange box.

The talented son of Honcho Classic out of Catunda Serena is on the verge of a hat-trick following his two classic conquests of this month.

The dashing dog marvellously won The Townviewfoods.Com Champion Stakes A1 525 over 525 yards on July 12 and went on to lift the ace title of the Frances Mcmahon Last Chase 525 on July 19. Both of these races were held at Shelbourne Park.

Prior to this, skilled sprinter marvellously grabbed two tremendous triumphs in a row during May 2012. He had also done the same in the month of March.

As a whole, Climb A Tree has accomplished numerous epic feats in his career so far. He has equally proved his class in various formats of the game. However, the dog has just three OR event to his credit.

Considering his current form, it is predicted that Climb A Tree will bring home to title of Sis Live Open 550 convincingly as none of his rivals is strong enough to impede him.

However, Forest Ralph will perform well in the race. The Mason trained black dog elegantly won a T2 race by the big margin of 7 lengths at Shelbourne Park on May 23. He moved ahead to grab a 4-length clean victory at the same venue on July 5.

The talented son of Forest Master out of Forest Daisy nicely finished first in his last outing over 550 yards on July 21. That was the OR contest.

In this situation, a neck-to-neck battle is expected between Forest Ralph and Claim A Tree. Let us see who carries the day. Good luck to both the contestants who will provide an amazing event to the spectators to enjoy.

JOKING ABOUT THE WEATHER

The emcee in Olympic Stadium is cracking jokes about the weather: "We need the rain! It wouldn't be the London Olympics without rain!"

? Cassandra Vinograd ? Twitter http://twitter.com/cassvinograd

___

IT'S RAINING!

It just had to happen. It's started to rain inside the Olympic Stadium

"Don't worry! Don't worry! It's only a little flat rain," said an organizer through a megaphone as a group of performers dressed as milk maids started to pick up the pace on the way inside.

___

LIKE A FARMYARD

The animals have just come into the stadium. That is 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens and nine geese. One of those horses is a shire horse. The music is starting to build and there are camera flashes all around the stadium. What will the animals make of that?

__

MANY COLORS

They've come from all over for these games and this opening ceremony. Fans seen filing into Olympic Stadium wearing the colors of Canada, Mexico, Poland, Italy, Russia, Germany, Brazil and seemingly all points in between.

That includes the most well-represented nation, of course: Team GB.

___

NO RAIN - YET

There's been so much talk about the British weather and if rain would spoil the opening ceremony. Well, it's still anyone's guess.

AP's John Krawczynski, outside the main stadium in Olympic Park, says: "It's cool with a light breeze and no rain. But it does feel as though it could rain at any moment."

ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE

The atmosphere is absolutely electric. We have already had a few attempts at doing the wave. Crew members in white coveralls and painter hats are parading these clouds around the stadium. Music up. Cheers up. scenes playing on the screens of past Olympians and young kids.

CEREMONY SECURITY

Security lines, or lack thereof, are moving easily at the Olympic Park. It does feel a bit like stumbling onto a military base ? fresh-faced young soldiers in uniform are everywhere, and every single X-ray machine and scanner is manned by soldiers rather than other organizing committee staff.

So many soldiers that some are just standing around, waiting for a crushof spectators that has not yet materialized.

PRESIDENTIAL FRIENDS

Maya Moore has spent so much time with the Obama family, she could be an honorary member.

She was the only female basketball player invited to play with the President in a game to celebrate his 49th birthday in 2010. She also did a soon to be released public service announcement with Michelle Obama in May supporting the "Let's Move!" campaign.

The two shared a hug and chatted for a few minutes Friday morning after the first lady opened her stint as leader of the U.S. Olympics delegation attending a breakfast with Olympians.

"That was a little treat," Moore says. "Any time I can see the president or first lady it's such a treat. She's someone who you can relate to because she's very active and enjoys sports. We know that whole family loves basketball."

EXCITED

Less than an hour before showtime and excited visitors are filing into Olympic Stadium.

Tarik Lacene, a Canadian who lives in London, scored tickets to the opening ceremony.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Lacene says. "It's amazing to think that over 1 billion people will be watching it on TV and we're actually here."

? Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/APkrawczynski

___

THE ANTICIPATION

From AP's Fergus Bell in place and awaiting the opening ceremony:

"A Mexican wave just started. The crowd are getting fired up. The scene is set on the stage in front of me depicting a rural idyll. There are tractors and a water wheel. There is a small cottage in the middle with two smoking chimneys. I have seen similar scenes in the English countryside but this looks a little cleaner, a little more fairytale.

? Fergus Bell ? Twitter http://twitter.com/fergb

___

GETTING THERE

AP's Cassandra Vinograd reports from the streets ? well, the railway tracks ? of London:

This reporter was in a bit of a panic ? left work late and wondered how she would ever get through the crowds to board a train to Olympic Park.

But tubes were not crowded and St. Pancras International, where you catch the high speed Javelin train, is a breeze. There were no lines whatsoever to get on the Javelin ? despite crowd-flow measures (barricades, like what airports use for long check-in lines). The line spaces were all empty.

The only glitch was a few travelers grumbling over a broken ticket machine, leaving only one working dispenser on the Javelin platform.

But no worries in the end. With so few jostling for space, everyone got a ticket in time.

NO KNOCKOFFS

Egypt's Olympic team won't be wearing knockoffs after all at the London Games.

Nike announced Friday it was donating its gear to the Egyptian athletes. This after the country's committee chairman said they'd turned to a Chinese distributor because the real thing was just too expensive.

Not so during the opening ceremony, though. Nike's shipment isn't due to arrive in London until Saturday.

WHITE RIBBONS

The widow of Alexander Litvinenko, the exiled former Russian agent who died from a mysterious case of radiation poisoning, is calling on Londoners to protest Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the Olympics.

Litvinenko issued a statement shortly before his 2006 death, accusing Putin of ordering him to be poisoned. He had been living in London since fleeing Russia in 2000. In a book written in exile, he accused Russia's main security agency, for which he once worked, of staging the 1999 apartment building bombings that were blamed on Chechen rebels and used as a justification for starting the second Chechen war.

British-Russian relations suffered a serious setback in 2007 after Russia refused to extradite the man that Britain named as the main suspect in Litvinenko's death.

Marina Litvinenko on Friday issued a statement saying "Mr. Putin's agents killed my husband" and called on Londoners wo wear white ribbons, the emblem of the Russian opposition, to proest Putin's visit Aug. 2 that is to include watching the judo.

___

WHERE TO WATCH?

AP's Jenna Fryer reports from the streets of London:

Is there no such thing as a sports bar here?

Looking for a pub where I can hang with the locals and watch the opening ceremony is proving to be more challenging than I expected.

Since arriving, I've noticed that not that many pubs have televisions, so I've had to ask around for recommendations for the ceremonies. The first two I called ? one of which was the favorite watering hole of the late Amy Winehouse ? said they had no plans to show the ceremonies. "Tonight's just a regular pub night," I was told.

It seemed strange to see bars without TV's, but to not have such a big event blaring from every television in the country tonight is just bizarre.

PREPPED FOR HISTORY

Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius has arrived in London for his historic debut at the Olympics and says he's feeling "a mixture of pride, happiness and anticipation" at the end of his long journey to compete at the highest level in able-bodied competition.

Pistorius made the short flight across from his training camp in northern Italy and says he's "really excited" to attend the opening ceremony.

The South African has been battling for four years to reach the 2012 games. He was cleared to compete against able-bodied competitors on his carbon fiber blades in 2008, ran two qualifying times for London in the last 12 months, but missed out on the crucial third under his country's strict qualifying criteria.

But the selectors had a last-minute change of heart weeks before the games and picked him for the individual 400 meters as well as the 4x400 relay.

In an email to the AP, Pistorius says: "This feels like a long time coming and I am ready! This is going to be, I hope, an incredible few weeks of my life."

His first run at the Olympics will be in the 400 heats on Aug. 4. It'll be history.

FOOD WITH NO NAME

Food choices are simple at the ExCel arena, the giant convention center hosting seven Olympic disciplines. Because McDonald's has exclusive rights to sell branded products, the dozen concessions at the venue are prohibited from using a specific name.

So, here's what's on offer on large signs:

?"Traditional Roast."

?"Sandwich."

?"Bagel"

?"Italian" or "Chinese."

? "Baked Potato" ? which, by the way, is often called a "jacket potato" in these parts.

KEEP DREAM-ING

You get the sense that LeBron James doesn't want to hear another word about it.

"Who's better ? 1992 or 2012?" That's been a talking point for weeks, the comparison between the 1992 Dream Team that went to Barcelona and this year's Olympic team.

"It's never going to happen," James said Friday of a hypothetical game between the two teams. "It doesn't matter how much conversation that we have about this team and the '92 Dream Team. It's never going to be played. Father Time is not going to allow that to happen. So it doesn't even matter."

That wasn't his way of downplaying expectations about what to expect from the U.S. squad in London.

Quite the contrary.

James, who won the NBA MVP award, the NBA Finals MVP award and led the Miami Heat to the title this past season, is fully expecting to add Olympic gold to his unbelievable year.

"I know one thing," James said. "I know we have a great team. And if we play as a team, like we're capable of doing, we can be one of the best teams ever assembled.

Google Chrome 20

Twenty. That's how many versions of Google's Web-changing browser have appeared to date. But the law of diminishing returns has been in strong evidence with the last few revs, and many of the new features in them have been designed merely to get you to use Google's services more.? In fact, commenters on Google's blog about Chrome releases were mystified about what was new in 20, aside from bug and security fixes. And, indeed, Chrome 20 is mostly about fixing existing features?over 6,000 updates in all?but many of the updates add support for Windows 8. Speaking of Windows, Chrome is also available for Mac and Linux, but this review focuses on the Windows version.

No matter, it's still the most capable Web browser, thanks to blazing speed, and ground-breaking features and technology support.? Hurtling it over the crowd are unique features like Chrome Instant, built-in Flash and PDF display, leading Web standards support, and a minimalist application window that lets Web pages shine unimpeded. The competition?Firefox 9 (Free, 4 stars), Internet Explorer 9 (Free, 4 stars), Safari 5.1 (Free, 4 stars), and Opera 11.60 (Free, 4 stars)?still struggles to equal Chrome's Spartan user interface, speedy operation, and emerging standards support.

Chrome's speed is boosted by hardware acceleration, the use of your PC's graphics processor to speed up operations, a first introduced by IE9. To this Chrome's adds support for 3D WebGL graphics that even works on older computers, such as those running Windows XP?something IE9 can't boast. Chrome is also the fastest browser to start up, as my testing shows.

But speed involves more than pure performance. Speed also comes with new standards support, in Chrome's case, for Google's SPDY initiative, which rewrites the basic transport protocol of the Web?HTTP. SPDY eliminates redundant interactions and compresses some sent data to speed up browsing. Only sites that support the standard, like some of Google's own, will benefit from the speedup, however.

Another speeder-upper comes in the form of Chrome's many "instant" features. First, there was Google Instant, by which Web search results start appearing as soon as you start typing in the Google search box. Then came Instant Pages, in which Chrome tries to guess which link you're likely to click on next, and preload that page in the background. Another "instant" feature, pre-loads the first-proposed autocomplete site in the background when you start typing in the browser's address bar, so that it springs into view instantly when you click on the auto suggestion's entry.

As it increases in popularity, Google Chrome is becoming more and more a conduit for Google's Web services, and the services themselves in turn are being honed for Chrome. The browser's new tab page is tweaked to give more prominence to the Chrome Web app store.

Chrome boasts all the Web browser tools we've come to expect: bookmark syncing, a built-in PDF reader, and extensions. The browser's fine design, compatibility, and especially the speed have impressed the Web community enough to make Chrome the fastest growing browser in terms of market share. On this measure, it's got anywhere from 19 to 34 percent, depending on whose numbers you believe. Let's take a look at what makes this browser so special.

Swift Setup
Even the setup process shows Chrome's commitment to speed: Just click the Install button on the Chrome Web page, and you'll have the browser up and running in less than a minute, with no wizard to go through and no system restart. The browser's available for Mac OS X and Linux, as well as Windows. It also updates itself automatically in the background.

Starting with version 17, a change in the first-run appearance of the browser occurred. You still saw a generous dialog box giving you the option to use Bing, Google, or Yahoo as your search engine, but the first view of the browser window asks you to sign into a Google account. This doesn?t change the behavior of the browser, but it does show Google?s increasingly solipsistic view of the Web, and raises concerns about browser tracking. On the plus side, it does give you the benefit of being able to sync your different browser settings and bookmarks on different computers (more on this later).

Chrome Instant Pages
Not to be confused with Chrome Instant (see below) or Google Instant (which works on all browser to load Google search results as you type), Chrome Instant Pages requires both Chrome and a site that supports the feature. Of the latter, there is now just one important one: Google Search. The idea is that when you perform a search in Google, the browser will pre-load the page for the result link you're most likely to click on.

In several tests on a slower Wi-Fi connection, however, I only noticed an occasional improvement for simple pages. It seemed only to work for the first result link. Heavy multimedia sites still took their time to load. On a very fast wired connection, some page result were extremely fast, but in that case, you don't really benefit from pre-loading. I saw a definitely faster load for grainger.com than in Opera on the same connection. The idea makes a lot of sense though, particularly for multipage articles, where it's most likely that the next link you'll hit is the one labeled "Next."

The only drawback: If the site guesses your next click wrong, page load could be slower than without Instant Pages, and you'll have wasted bandwidth loading a page you never visited. But this is a technique that's been done using JavaScript or HTML and CSS for years, so I'm not sure why we need a browser-specific solution to preloading pages, but Instant Pages does have the ability to load outside sites, rather than just pages of your own. If you don't like the idea of your browser loading pages before you click on a link, you can turn off the feature in the Under the Hood section of Options (accessible from the wrench icon), and uncheck "Predict network actions to improve page load performance."

Built-in Flash and PDF Support
Chrome is the only browser to come with Adobe Flash built in, rather than requiring a separate (and annoying) installation. And not having to perform the frequent required updates of the Flash plugin separately is another boon?it updates automatically with the browser. With version 10, many of the security issues with Flash (famously bemoaned by Apple's Steve Jobs) went away, thanks to running the plugin in an isolated sandbox so that it doesn't have access to critical system areas.

Chrome boasts a PDF reader as well, so you don't have to worry about installing any Adobe plugins for viewing specialized Web content. When you load a PDF, an intuitive toolbar shows when your mouse cursor is in the southeast vicinity of the browser window. From this, you can have the document fill the width of the window, show a full page, or zoom in and out. By default, you can select text for cutting and pasting, but I couldn't copy and paste images. You can print the PDF as you would any Web page.

Chrome's PDF viewer not only does what its name implies, but also serves as a print preview feature. Unlike IE's print preview, Chrome's shows up in a tab rather than its own window. But you have to go through it to print: In IE, I can just click the printer icon to send a page to the printer if I don't want to fuss with settings. I could choose between color and B&W, portrait and landscape, and choose the target printer, or print to PDF.

An Advanced button got me into the printer's own settings dialog, but this dismissed the print preview, making me have to choose Print from the menu again. But Chrome didn't let me choose a zoom percentage for the printout as Firefox and IE did, nor did it let me turn page headers on and off or choose margin sizes in a Page Setup dialog as those two did. So Chrome's print preview is a decent start, but it's still a bit behind the competition.

Interface
Minimalism has been a hallmark of Chrome since its first beta release. Tabs are above everything, and the only row below them holds the combined search/address bar, or "Omnibox." Here you can type any part of an address or page title, and the most likely site candidates will be presented in a dropdown. Optionally you can display bookmark links in a row below this. And the control buttons on the top-right of the browser window have been reduced to the absolute minimum?just one.

Google has removed the Page icon and placed some of its functions under the wrench button. Some of the Page options have been combined into buttons on one line in the menu, such as Cut, Copy, and Paste. I like what Google's done with the Zoom choice on the menu, adding plus and minus buttons that save you from having to fly out another submenu.

Another theme in the Chrome interface is that everything looks like a Web page, displaying in the main browser window, rather than in separate dialog boxes. This includes the interfaces for History, Extensions, Bookmarks, and even Options.

Mac users haven't been overlooked in the interface department, either. The browser supports OS X Lion's full screen view, along with overlay scrollbars that only appear when you're scrolling. Other more minor characteristics of the OS X "Aqua" style give Chrome on the Mac a more Mac-y appearance.

Former Indiana basketball player Neil Reed dies

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (AP) ? Neil Reed, the former Indiana basketball player who coach Bob Knight was caught on tape choking in 1997, has died after collapsing in his Central California home. He was 36.

Pioneer Valley High School Principal Shanda Herrera said Reed died Thursday morning of heart complications in Nipomo, Calif.

In March 2000, Reed accused Knight of choking him during a practice in 1997.

When video of the practice surfaced backing Reed's claim, the Hall of Fame coach, who was known for his temper as well as his success, was put on a zero-tolerance policy by then-Indiana University President Dr. Myles Brand.

That September, Knight, who became head coach at Indiana in 1971 and won three national championships, was fired after a student accused him of grabbing his arm.

"Believe it or not, I'm not happy that Indiana fired Coach Knight," Reed told ESPN The Magazine at the time. "I don't have any feelings about it, mostly because I've had to stand alone for so long. In a way, I've been proven right, but that doesn't make my life any easier."

Reed transferred to Southern Mississippi shortly after the incident at Indiana and played there in the 1998-99 season. He told the magazine he "fell out of love" with basketball.

"Maybe that was Coach Knight's fault and maybe it was partly my fault," he said. "But if I can handle what I've been through, then I know I can handle what lies ahead."

His coach at Southern Miss, James Green, called Reed a "winner" Thursday night.

"He did the things that it takes to win ball games," said Green, now the coach at Jacksonville State in Alabama. "He was good to coach. You knew he was going to go out and give his best."

Green worked with Reed's father, Terry, at Southern Miss and Iowa State.

"When something like that happens, it's like part of your family," Green said. "It's kind of like when you have children, you never expect them to be passing before you."

Herrera said Reed had worked at the Santa Maria school coaching football, basketball, golf and teaching physical education since 2007.

"The shock of the passing of Neil Reed and the sadness we feel for his wife, two daughters and entire family is overwhelming," Indiana coach Tom Crean posted on his Twitter account Thursday. "Tragic news."

Reed is survived by his wife, Kelly, and two daughters.

Next Space Station Crew to Try 'Fishy' Science

When the next Russian-built Soyuz capsule launches to the International Space Station in October, it will deliver three new crewmembers to the orbiting outpost. But the trio of spaceflyers will be sharing their ride with some special cargo: 32 small fish for a science experiment at the space lab.

NASA astronaut Kevin Ford and Russian cosmonauts Evgeny Tarelkin and Oleg Novitskiy are scheduled to launch to the International Space Station on Oct. 15 from the Baikonour Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Their Soyuz TMA-06M capsule will also be carrying 32 medaka fish ? a type of fish native to Southeast Asia ? to the orbiting complex.

"They'll be on our Soyuz with us ? 32 fish, plus the three of us," Ford told reporters in a news briefing Thursday (July 26).

The medakas will become part of an experiment carried out on the station to investigate the effects of microgravity on fish. The astronauts aboard the outpost will monitor changes in the fish as they live in orbit. [7 Everyday Things that Happen Strangely In Space]

"When we come onboard, one of the first items will be to get these fish transferred and into their habitat and get the experiment underway," Ford explained.

The fish will stay in a special aquatic habitat that is being delivered to the space station by a robotic Japanese cargo freighter. The Japanese unmanned H-2 Transfer Vehicle-3, or HTV-3, launched into orbit on July 20, and arrived at the space station today (July 27).

Scientists are particularly interested in how the skeletal systems of fish change in the near weightless environment aboard the space station, said Julie Robinson, an International Space Station program scientist.

It has long been known that exposure to microgravity for extended periods of time can carry negative consequences, including loss of muscle and bone density. To prevent lasting harmful effects, space station astronauts adhere to rigorous exercise regimens, and doctors on the ground closely monitor their health.

But experiments such as the one with medaka fish do not hold potential benefits for only spaceflyers. The results of these types of studies can have far-reaching effects on Earth, too.

"It's an experiment, essentially, for osteoporosis," Ford explained.

The lessons learned from studying the skeletal systems of fish in space can inform scientists on the ground about how bones degrade over time here on Earth. This type of scientific research is part of what inspired the motto for this space station-bound crew: From the Earth, for the Earth.

"The idea is that the space station is up there for everybody, and even though it's essentially 15 countries that put [forward] their resources, it's really there for everybody on the planet."

But for Ford, Tarelkin and Novitskiy, the medaka fish will also be their companions for the thrilling journey to the International Space Station.

"I won't have my 'gone fishing' hat, though," Ford joked.

Writing Using the Eyes Might Help Paralyzed Communicate

THURSDAY, July 26 (HealthDay News) -- A new technology may enable people who have lost the ability to move their arms or legs to use their eyes to write in cursive, or script.

The technology, which enables people to produce smooth eye movements in desired directions, could be of great benefit to people who have lost limb movement because of diseases such as Lou Gehrig's disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called ALS) or spinal or other injuries, according to the study published online July 26 in the journal Current Biology.

The "eye-writing" technology might also help improve eye-movement control in people with conditions such as dyslexia or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or in professions that require strong eye focus, such as surgeons and athletes, according to a journal news release.

"Contrary to the current belief, we show that one can gain complete, voluntary control over smooth pursuit eye movements," Jean Lorenceau, of Pierre and Marie Curie University-Paris, said in the news release. "The discovery also provides a tool to use smooth pursuit eye movements as a pencil to draw, write or generate a signature."

The technology uses a visual display to help people learn to develop smooth eye movement. It doesn't take much practice, according to Lorenceau.

"One can also imagine that, in the long term, eye movements can routinely be used in man-machine interactions," he said.

Lorenceau is developing an improved version of the eye writer, and tests with ALS patients should begin next year, according to the release.

More evidence that Samsung smartphone sales steamrolled Apple in Q2

Strong Demand for Smartphones in Second Quarter Continues to Drive the Worldwide Mobile Phone Market, According to IDC?

26 Jul 2012

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. July 26, 2012?? The worldwide mobile phone market grew 1% year over year in the second quarter of 2012 (2Q12), as Samsung and Apple shipped almost half of the world?s smartphones. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC)?Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 406.0 million units in 2Q12 compared to 401.8 million units in the second quarter of 2011.

Samsung and Apple have more than doubled their combined market share over the past two years, which has created more distance between the companies and the competition. ?Samsung and Apple have quickly become the global smartphone heavyweights though both employ somewhat different approaches to the market,? said?Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC?sWorldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. ?Samsung employs a ?shotgun? strategy wherein many models are created that cover a wide range of market segments. Apple, in contrast, offers a small number of high-profile models. While both companies have expanded their geographic presence in pursuit of market share, the two companies will inevitably come into greater conflict as both try to generate additional gains.?

Market share gains will be harder to generate, however, if the worldwide smartphone market grows at rates similar to the 42.1% year-over-year rate at which the market increased in 2Q12. This was the lowest growth rate since the fourth quarter of 2009. Vendors shipped 153.9 million smartphones in 2Q12 compared to 108.3 million units in 2Q11. The 42.1% year-over-year growth was one percentage point lower than IDC?s forecast of 43.1% for the quarter.

The spectre of further economic woes puts growth prospects for the mobile phone market at risk. ?With half of 2012 behind us, vendors are looking ahead to 2013 and how key markets ? particularly Europe and emerging markets ? will play out,? said?Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC?s?Mobile Phone Technology and Trends?team. ?Despite recent maneuvers to shore up several countries within the Eurozone, the effectiveness of these efforts remains to be seen. Meanwhile, emerging markets will continue to be strong contributors due to their sheer size and growth trajectory, but how much they can offset potential declines in other countries is unclear.?

Nonetheless, IDC expects long-term mobile phone and smartphone shipment demand to grow steadily in 2012 and through the years ahead due to the central role mobile phones play in people?s lives. ?For many users, the mobile phone has become the essential communications link to others and to the world,? noted Llamas.

Smartphone Vendor Highlights

Samsung?extended its lead over Apple during the second quarter, taking advantage of Apple?s release schedule and launching its flagship Galaxy S III. In addition, Samsung experienced continued success of its smartphone/tablet hybrid device, the Galaxy Note. As a result, Samsung topped the 50 million unit mark and reached a new quarterly smartphone shipment record in a single quarter. What remains to be seen is how the company?s smartphones will fare against Apple?s next-generation iPhone expected later this year.

Apple?posted an expected sequential decline last quarter, similar to years past. The quarter-over-quarter shipment decline came six months after it unveiled its latest iPhone. The decline is not unusual as iPhone shipment volume is highest in the first two quarters after its release. The company?s once-a-year release cycle usually results in two quarters of lower volumes leading up to the next-generation model introduction. Nonetheless, Apple made significant inroads into new markets and segments, including smaller regional carriers and prepaid service providers.

Nokia?smartphone business underwent another quarter of transition. Demand for Symbian and MeeGo units declined, reaching levels not seen since 2005 though the company almost doubled its Windows Phone shipments from the previous quarter. Nokia?s Lumia sales were not terribly affected by Microsoft?s Windows Phone 8 announcement, which will prevent current Lumia owners from upgrading to the new mobile operating system. However, Lumia sales have remained steady and key enhancements available on the new platform will eventually become available to current Lumia owners. Nokia, however, has a long path to travel before it can reclaim previous volume levels and challenge Apple and Samsung for smartphone supremacy.

HTC?rebounded from its struggles in the two previous quarters to reclaim the number 4 spot in the smartphone vendor rankings. Its relatively strong performance in the Asia/Pacific region allowed it to climb back up the rank order as did the correction of its channel inventory issues. The company?s streamlined portfolio means future share gains will be predicated upon the success of its One products.

ZTE?climbed into the smartphone Top 5 for the first time thanks primarily to shipments of its lower-cost entry-level smartphones in China, where it?s based. However, the vendor has also grown its international smartphone sales, particularly in the U.S. where its smartphones can be found under other brands. Latin America is another source of significant smartphone growth for the vendor. Despite impressive gains last quarter, brand equity may prove to be an issue for ZTE in future. Strong brand recognition is a necessity if high-growth smartphone sales abroad are a priority for the company.

Italian yields rise on sovereign debt fears

MILAN (AP) ? Investor concern about Italy's ability to return its sluggish economy to growth push the country's borrowing costs up to their highest level since November in a sale of two-year bonds.

Italy Thursday paid 4.86 percent to sell ?2.5 billion ($3.03 billion) in two-year debt, up from 4.71 percent a month ago. Demand was a strong ? 1.78 times the relatively modest offer.

It was the highest rate paid on two-year bonds since Premier Mario Monti's government of technocrats took power with the remit of protecting Italy's economy from the European debt crisis.

Despite austerity and economic reform measures, investors are worried that Italy will not be able to control its public debt, which has reached 123 percent of GDP ? the second-highest among the 17 countries that use the euro.

Find Out Why Cancer Rates Differ in North, South Jersey

A first-ever report from the American Cancer Society details the toll that cancer takes on the residents of New Jersey, county by county.??The Cancer Burden in New Jersey? shows the difference in cancer rates in South Jersey vs. North Jersey. The higher cancer incidence in South Jersey is attributed mainly due to a higher prevalence of smoking among residents. A top recommendation includes increased funding for the state?s anti-tobacco program.

Cigarettes

?Our analysis shows a ?tale of two states,?? says Blair Horner, Vice President for Advocacy, American Cancer Society of NY & NJ.? ?Downstaters face higher cancer rates than upstaters. Generally speaking, men in downstate counties are more likely to have higher than average lung cancer rates, the largest cancer killer. We also know that downstaters also tend to have higher smoking rates than those living upstate. We hope that this report will jump start a statewide discussion on how to reduce cancer incidence, identify cancers earlier, and to assist those in treatment.?

Key findings in the report include; almost 50,000 New Jerseyans were diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and more than 16,000 died from the disease; prostate cancer is New Jersey?s most common cancer; and lung cancer is the largest cancer killer causing more than 4,100 deaths last year.

Recommendations include; creating policies and laws that prevent cancer such as adequately supporting anti-smoking programs; enhancing early detection; and easing the financial burden that comes with cancer treatments by ensuring that all New Jerseyans have access to quality, affordable health insurance.

The entire report with the county-by-county breakdown can be found at acscan.org/nj. Horner says because of differences in population and average ages in the counties, comparing your county to another is really not applicable, but you can compare your county to itself.
