The Environmental (Dis)Connection | Deep Sea News

?

What is it about Facebook though? What makes it so enticing that over one-seventh of the global populace decided to jump on the social media bandwagon? Oddly enough, I think the answer is quite simple and right on the front page.

?

?Connect with friends and the world around you on Facebook.?

Whoomp! There it is?.

Connect.

As a society we thrive on our connections. This is why social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, hell even the Internetz itself, have flourished. They provide an instantaneous tie in which one can network and find community with the rest of the world.

Despite a society so ?virtually linked,? I find it perplexing that we have seemingly lost our sense of environmental connectivity. What do I mean by this? In general, we have developed this diluted misconception that our actions do not directly affect the natural world around us. Now this is nothing new, I am not making some profound observation about the state of the planet. However, what I am interested in is where does this start? This disassociation between the greater ecosystem and ourselves.

Where all my people at? Source: Wikimedia Commons

Where all my people at?
Source: Wikimedia Commons

Perhaps, it originates with our upbringing? Did your parents instill the importance of nature in your household? Maybe we can even take it back to our high school biology classroom. Remember when you were first learning about food webs and the flow of energy through an ecosystem? What is the one component that is never on those nifty little charts yet plays perhaps the biggest role in driving many ecological interactions? Or perhaps we live in a society so driven to get to the ahead that it will disregard any environmental consequence to get there and that nothing else even matters. <-Likely.

?

Regardless, in many indigenous cultures, the ideology of environmental connectivity has become engrained in cultural identity. These ancient peoples directly rely on the surrounding environment to sustain life and subsequently realize that the health of the environment is not only their responsibility, but also essential to their survival. They understand this connection and such knowledge is passed down through the generations. Thus we must ask ourselves what are we engraining? What idea of connectivity are we passing on? We have become masters of cultivating our social ties and connections to the people around us, but are we cultivating that same connection with our environment?

Ecologically this ?Environmental (Dis)Connect? presents a problem for the current and future health of so many ecosystems. If society remains on this current path, our own environment is likely to ?de-friend? us.? So what do we do about it?

My colleagues and I have frequently discussed this topic the past couple of months in regards to our role within the local and global community. As scientists, we feel that this is in part our responsibility to educate the general public on the importance of environmental connectivity. As one who is always interested in the use of film to get a message across, here is the first look at what we came up with. This film looks to serve a two-fold purpose: 1) to connect with our community and give them a glimpse of our marine lab and what we actually do there (Yay Science!) and 2) to instill in them the importance of our critical connection with the environment at large.

Texas Longhorns DBs jockeying for starting jobs; ?No one is safe?

There?s talent in the Longhorns? secondary, but defensive backs coach Duane Akina is going to have to find a way to fit it all together.

Cornerbacks Carrington Byndom and Quandre Diggs are known commodities, but Byndom struggled for the first two months of the 2012 season, and Diggs could very well move to safety to replace Kenny Vaccaro. Senior-to-be Adrian Phillips had a disappointing junior campaign, and his lack of physicality suggests safety might not be his best position. The same could be said for Mykkele Thompson, a tremendous athlete who had a whale of a time tackling anybody as a sophomore (good luck forgetting Trey Millard?s hurdle over him and Phillips). Josh Turner, a cornerback in high school, shined as a safety. Sheroid Evans might be breaking through at corner. Redshirt freshmen Adrian Colbert and Bryson Echols looked strong during Texas? open practices this weekend.

In Big 12 competition, Texas will have to use up to six of its defensive backs. But which ones?

?Really at the moment, no one is safe,? Phillips said Tuesday. ?After the season we had last year that is really where all the coaches? mindsets are. Everywhere across the board, everyone is battling for a position. We are going to practice saying, ?I have to win [those battles] and I have to get better. If I get better, maybe it will raise the next man?s level as well.??

Guess who?s coming to dinner? Obama invites Republicans

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (L) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (R) stand as an honor guard passes??In an unusually intense personal charm offensive, President Barack Obama has invited at least 10 Republican Senators to dinner on Wednesday.?And he plans to make a rare appearance next week at the Senate GOP?s weekly closed-door luncheon and meet separately with House Republicans, according to congressional officials.

Wednesday's dinner was set for 6:30 pm at the Jefferson Hotel, down the street from the White House. The guest list includes Republican Sen. John McCain, Obama's 2008 presidential rival, along with GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham, Bob Corker, Kelly Ayotte, Tom Coburn, Dan Coats, Mike Johanns, Pat Toomey, John Hoeven, and Ron Johnson, according to ABC.

Obama has also been working the phones, reaching out to individual lawmakers after a White House meeting on Friday with congressional leaders of both parties failed to yield a breakthrough on replacing painful across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration.

But the stakes are far higher than that: The president?s entire second-term agenda, including an audacious effort to overhaul the country?s immigration policy, depends on forging compromises with his political foes. Republicans can refuse to bring up legislation for a vote in the House of Representatives and, at least on paper, have the votes to block action by the Senate.

At a press conference last week, Obama alternated between vaguely self-pitying expressions of helplessness in the face of GOP intransigence?reminding the public he is neither ?a dictator? nor can he wield a ?Jedi mind-meld??and a more can-do vow to redouble his efforts to work with a congressional ?caucus of common sense.?

His plan: Revive negotiations on a ?grand bargain? to reduce government deficits by some $4 trillion over 10 years with a blend of spending cuts and tax increases.

?In the coming days and in the coming weeks I?m going to keep on reaching out to them, both individually and as groups of senators or members of the House, and say to them, 'Let?s fix this?not just for a month or two, but for years to come,? he said.

As part of what appears to be a new era of outreach, Obama will also join Senate Republicans at their weekly behind-closed-doors lunch next week, GOP Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Wednesday. Obama requested the March 14 meeting on Tuesday through his chief of staff.

?Senate Republicans welcome the president to the Capitol. And I appreciate he took my recommendation to hear from all of my members,? McConnell said in a statement.

?We promised the American people that we would cut Washington spending, and the president signed those cuts into law. We have numerous challenges facing the country, and Republicans have offered the president serious solutions to shrink Washington spending and grow the economy," the Kentucky Republican said. "And we will have an opportunity to discuss them with the president at the lunch.?

Obama last attended a Senate Republican luncheon on May 25, 2010, according to McConnell's office.

On Friday, the president met with McConnell, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Republicans broadly dismissed that discussion as an 11th-hour photo op. The two sides have been at war over painful automatic spending cuts hitting federal agencies across the board, reductions known in Washington as "sequestration."

Those cuts are expected to slow already sluggish economy growth and cost as many as 750,000 jobs by hitting agencies across the board rather than making considered reductions to bloated or wasteful programs. House Republicans have charged that the White House had 18 months between the time when Obama signed the cuts into law to come up with a plan to replace them and failed to do so. That claim is untrue.

Obama has also requested a meeting with House Republicans next week, but that has yet to be scheduled, Boehner chief of staff, Mike Sommers, said in an email message to GOP lawmakers on Wednesday.

Google Play Offers Over 5M eBooks And More Than 18M Songs, One Year After Its Rebranding

google-play-logoGoogle has just announced via its official blog that Google Play is officially one year old today. The actual marketplace itself is older than that, with the Android Market debuting in 2008, but it has been a year since Google changed the store's branding to reflect its broader purpose, which extends to media and use on platform besides its mobile OS. Google rehashed some of its previous milestones, but shed some new light on the size of two of its media categories: eBooks and music.

See Douglas, Damon in best Liberace photo yet

By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

We've been fascinated for months by occasional photos showing the transformation of Michael Douglas and Matt Damon for the upcoming Liberace biopic "Behind the Candelabra." Now Entertainment Weekly shows off the two stars with a glitzy cover and story about the Steven Soderbergh-directed HBO film.

Entertainment Weekly

Douglas (as the famed entertainer) and Damon (as his young lover Scott Thorson) take hair, makeup and wardrobe?to their late-'70s extremes. EW calls the movie?"one of the weirdest, glitziest gay love stories ever put on film, one that required both actors to do things they?d never done before onscreen."

Damon tells the magazine about the ritual for achieving his spray-tanned backside and about filming sex scenes with Douglas.

Douglas says he was advised by Debbie Reynolds, a close friend of Liberace's, who also plays his mother in the film. "She just told me, '[Your voice] can never be too nasal.'"

'Once Upon a Time': Next stop, Neverland!

ABC

Colin O'Donoghue as Hook on ABC's "Once Upon a Time."

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

"Once Upon a Time" is headed to Neverland!

At Sunday's PaleyFest panel, executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (aka "Lost" Boys themselves) dropped all manner of hints about where the series is headed this season and next.

For starters, they revealed the titles of season two's two-part finale: "Second Star to the Right"/"Straight on 'Til Morning."

As J.M. Barrie wrote in "Peter Pan," "That, Peter had told Wendy, was the way to the Neverland; but even birds, carrying maps and consulting them at windy corners, could not have sighted it with these instructions."

Good thing Emma's baby daddy, Baelfire, knows how to sail a pirate ship, eh?

Bizarre Love Triangle: Bae/Neal might have a romantic rival in Hook. As Jennifer Morrison, who plays Emma, told The Clicker before taking the stage, "Emma's definitely intrigued by Hook -- he is a kindred spirit for sure. He's someone who will do whatever it takes to survive, the same way Emma has in her past. I think she relates to that and has some sort of respect for it. Even though he doesn't always have the best intentions, she's drawn to him and at least feels connected to him in that way."

Although many fans would approve of this, um, Hookup, don't count on the endorsement of Emma's parents.

"I don't think that we would be too keen on (her) being with someone who shared her baby daddy's mother's bed," Ginnifer Goodwin (Mary-Margaret/Snow) joked at the panel. Josh Dallas (Charming/David) was even more blunt, telling The Clicker, "He's a bit of a d----- bag -- (albeit) a good-looking one."

Besides Bae and Hook, producers say the finale will introduce at least one new character from Neverland, whom we won't actually meet until season three.

Recasting the Mad Hatter: Kitsis refuted rumors that another actor would be wearing the magic top hat, in "OUAT" or a possible spin-off. "We have no plans to recast anyone," he said, noting that actor Sebastian Stan is "a very busy man" so it's unclear when we'll see the return of Jefferson.

Snow Black: In next Sunday's episode, "The Miller's Daughter," Snow does something very, very bad, which will have grave repercussions not only on her relationship with Regina, but with her loved ones. Goodwin shared at the panel, "What she is going through is going to shake her self-identity."

And her relationship with Regina as well: Lana Parrilla cackled, "I get to dish it right back at her ... it's gonna get pretty intense. We're definitely going to see a different side from Mary-Margaret."

And when we asked Parrilla to rate Regina on a scale of 1 to pure evil, she revealed, "It's gonna be about a 14."

'80s Flashback: In March 17's "Welcome to Storybrooke," we're going back to 1983. Along with the return of the Huntsman (Jamie Dornan), dished Kitsis, "We are going to get more insight into what it was like that very first week in 1983 what was life like for the evil queen to live in -- and to figure out this modern clothing."

But Parrilla told The Clicker her request for crimped hair was shot down. "I always wanted a crimper when I was younger and my mother never got one. They're like, 'No, that's not happening!' "

The Trouble With Henry: Remember how the seer told Rumpelstilskin that a young boy would prove to be his undoing? "It's very interesting what happens with Gold and Henry," Robert Carlyle told The Clicker about the dark one's relationship with his grandson. "Henry's a problem to Gold -- a big problem. A massive problem. Henry's in danger!" ??

But Horowitz teased at the panel, "Is undoing a bad thing?" Ooooh! ?

"Racy Lacey": That's how Emilie de Ravin describes her Belle's alter ego in "Lacey." "You learn a lot about my character in episode 19," the actress told The Clicker. In addition to her iconic gold dress, she said, "You'll see a lot of back and forth and learn more about Rumpel-Belle in present day and their back story."

"She's the opposite of Belle," Kitsis said about Lacey. "Things are going to get very interesting for Mr. Gold!"

"Gold's desperate to try to get Belle back obviously and make that right," Carlyle told The Clicker. "He is very close to doing that when Regina really gets in the way. Badly. That really knocks it way, way, way back. And he's almost got to start again with her. It's a real game changer."

"It's just gonna get better and better," Dallas enthused to The Clicker. "This season is ramping up, and it's just gonna keep pushing the envelope. "It's going to go someplace where you don't expect it -- just like in season one.

"This entire run to the end are some of the strongest episodes we've done," added Kitsis and Horowitz. "It's really like a freight train. Gold brought magic in the beginning of the season, and we know magic always has a price. So the finale's about that price."
