Wall Street lower as Greece talks drag on (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks gave up early gains on Wednesday as the Dow hovered at its highest level in nearly four years and investors waited for Greece to accept tough reforms in exchange for a new bailout.
Efforts by the Greek prime minister to get the three parties in his government to accept reforms demanded by the European Union and International Monetary Fund seemed to have been thwarted by arguments over procedural matters.
And policymakers were still divided on what contribution the European Central Bank could make to a restructuring of Greece's sovereign debt, sources said.
"It is going to be a drawn-out process like it has been, but the market has been looking beyond that," said Tim Ghriskey, investment officer of Solaris Asset Management in Bedford Hills, New York.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 38.03 points, or 0.30 percent, at 12,840.17. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 2.73 points, or 0.20 percent, at 1,344.32. The Nasdaq Composite Index was off 5.46 points, or 0.19 percent, at 2,898.62.
Energy shares fell the most as Brent and U.S. crude oil futures pared gains after a report showed a build-up in U.S. crude inventories. The S&P energy index fell 0.7 percent, while Exxon Mobil Corp was the biggest drag on the Dow, falling nearly 1 percent to $85.10.
The Dow closed Tuesday at its highest level since May 2008 as stocks rallied from late last year on central bank action and signs of an improving economy.
The Dow is up 21 percent since early October and has retraced over 80 percent of its bear market slide from 2007 to early 2009.
The blue-chip index is now about 10 percent away from its all-time high hit in October 2007.
"New highs bode well for future performance," technical analysts at Instinet in New York said in a research note. "From an intermediate perspective a new high would be a positive for the index."
High-profile Wall Streeters raised eyebrows with their endorsement of stocks.
Laurence D. Fink, chief executive of BlackRock, the world's largest money manager, told Bloomberg Television that investors should be 100 percent in stocks.
That followed bullish comments from the staff of renowned market bear Nouriel Roubini. Gina Sanchez, Roubini's director of equity and allocation strategy, told CNBC that the rally "has some legs."
"Any day when you a number of pundits come out and say you should own stocks, a lot of people say 'Oh, time to sell', especially after the market's had a big move," said Ghriskey.
Walt Disney Co rose nearly 1 percent to $41.34 and was a top boost to the Dow a day after it reported quarterly profit that grew faster than expected.
Polo Ralph Lauren Corp surged nearly 10 percent to $171.90 after the clothing maker reporting better-than-expected results for the holiday quarter and raised its margin forecast.
Ingersoll-Rand Plc climbed 1.8 percent to $38.23 after quarterly results topped estimates, although sales fell.
Of the 315 in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings to date, 61.0 percent have been above analyst expectations.
McDonald's Corp shed 0.7 percent to $100.24 after January sales rose more than expected at its established restaurants across the globe.
Visa Inc, due later Wednesday, is expected to come in with a profit of $1.45 per share, up from $1.23 a year ago, helped by a rise in consumer spending in the holiday season.
Other companies due to report include Cisco Systems Inc and News Corp.
Cisco is expected to post a stable quarter, lifted by improving U.S. enterprise demand a year after the network equipment maker issued a weak outlook.
Investors will also eye Groupon Inc, coming with its first results as a public company, to see if the largest daily deal website makes its first quarterly profit. Groupon is expected to report earnings of 3 cents per share on revenue of $475 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
According to Thomson Reuters data through Tuesday morning, of the 301 companies in the S&P 500 posting results, 60 percent topped expectations, tracking below recent quarters at this point of the reporting season.
Rambus Inc advanced 8.2 percent to $8.16 after the company reached a patent license agreement with Nvidia Corp and the companies settled all outstanding claims. Nvidia shares rose 3.2 percent to $16.25.

Wakeboarding Wetsuits, Parks And Tricks, Wakeboarding Is A ...
The evolution of wakeboards, wakeboarding tricks, wakeboarding wetsuits and the environments tackled by wakeboarders has been a remarkably rapid process. It was not so long ago that someone first thought to attach foot straps to a surfboard and tow the whole setup behind a motorized vehicle. It was only the early 1980's that this moment occurred, and wakeboarding has been on an upward trajectory of progress and innovation ever since. Now wakeboarding is recognized as a sport unto itself, with its own particular equipment, tricks, and styles. Here are some of the key innovations that illustrate the rapid rise of wakeboarding into the unique sport it is today.
The legends of early wakeboarding say that the first boards were towed by a truck driving along the shoreline of the ocean. Since then, wakeboarding has expanded to more locations than its originators could have imagined. Wakeboarding is commonly done in lakes, where the riders can be towed by a rowboat or jetski. Increasingly common are closed cable parks, in which vehicles with tow ropes are replaced by electrically powered motors suspended above the course. Oftentimes, these settings are equipped with other obstacles that the rider can use to perform tricks. What results is an range of tricks and maneuvers reminiscent of skateboarding. For example, a wakeboarding-friendly lake might feature launch ramps, ledges and rails, and some cable parks might even contain drops and gaps for wakeboarders to jump over. Taking this approach to tackling obstacles even further, some wakeboarders will look for obstacles on the shores beside rivers or canals, or even areas or waterways next to dams and drainage tunnels. In these shallower waters, the riders are more likely to be towed by a jetski rather than a boat.
A similarity between wakeboarding and other board sports is that some of the most technical and impressive tricks are those that involve a high number of rotations. From the fist time someone did a 180 and started riding switch stance and/or fakie (traveling backwards), riders of wakeboards, skateboards, snowboards, and surfboards have been pushing to limit toward spinning in ever greater circles. Each time someone lands a trick with an additional 180 degrees past the previous maximum, the expectations of what is possible have been exploded. In wakeboarding, this moment happened in 2008, when Danny Harf landed the first 1260 - that's three and a half rotations, with the added difficulty of having to pass the tow rope behind the back after each spin. Granted, it is risky to compare rotations between board sports - bodies clad in wake wetsuits have different levels of agility, and landing just a 360 in street skating is still considered a fairly advanced trick, while skiers and snowboarders have gone as high as 1620. But the wakeboard record is remarkable because it marks the sport's rapid progression, from struggling to stand up against the force of the tow line to sticking 1260's in only a few decades.
And of course, there are the wakeboards themselves. What began as a surfboard with improvised footstraps has matured into a board sleek enough to cut through a powerful wake, and light enough to give the rider the temporary power of flight. Some riders have even gone back to the pre-footstrap style, rejecting bindings in favor of a "wakeskate" that allows for the board to be flipped and spun independent of the rider. As the sport has become increasingly technical, wakeboarding wetsuits and other specialized gear has also emerged. No matter what kind of board used, the fact remains: wakeboarding sprang from nowhere and now it is pushing the boundaries of strength and style in the water.

Giants top Pats for 2nd Super Bowl in 4 years (AP)
INDIANAPOLIS ? Tom Brady let his final pass fly toward the scrum of players in the end zone, hoping for an incredible finish.
Uh-uh, Tom. Not in this city, and not in this game.
Indianapolis is a Manning town, whether it's Peyton or Eli pulling out the wins. And the Super Bowl is suddenly the province of the New York Giants, who have figured out how to topple Brady and the New England Patriots in the biggest moments.
Eli Manning led another fourth-quarter touchdown drive and won his second Super Bowl MVP on Sunday night, leading the Giants to a 21-17 victory that provided a pulsating finish to an NFL season that started with turmoil and a lockout.
"It's been a wild game," said Manning, who now has one more Super Bowl title than his older brother. "It's been a wild season,"
A wild finish was certainly fitting.
The Giants (13-7) almost didn't make the playoffs, needing a lot of help at 7-7 with two games left. Their defense finally came together, and Manning gave them a chance in every game with his penchant for comebacks ? a league-record 15 touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Of course, his greatest career comeback was in that Super Bowl four years ago, when the Patriots were undefeated and Manning led a late scoring drive that included an enduring Super Bowl moment ? the incredible catch David Tyree made by trapping the ball against his helmet.
The Patriots (15-4) had a chance to avoid more such history on Sunday. Brady, trying to match boyhood hero Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw with four Super Bowl titles, had New England in range to put it away late in the fourth quarter.
Wes Welker dropped a pass at the 20-yard line with 4 minutes left, forcing a punt that gave the Giants another chance trailing 17-15.
"It comes to the biggest moment of my life, and (I) don't come up with it," said a red-eyed Welker. "It's one of those plays I've made a thousand times."
Manning's turn for more Super Bowl magic.
He threw a spot-on 38-yard pass down the sideline to Mario Manningham, fitting the ball perfectly between two defensive backs barreling down on the receiver. Manningham got both feet down before getting smacked out of bounds in front of the Patriots' bench, a catch that was upheld on replay and reminded the 68,658 fans at Lucas Oil Stadium ? one in particular ? about that other catch four years earlier.
"In those situations, you are always looking to see who is going to be the guy," Tyree said, in the Giants locker room.
Once Manningham came down with it, the Giants sensed things had turned their way, just like four years earlier.
"I think they are both spectacular catches," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "I think with Mario's earlier tonight, the way he kept his feet inbounds and held onto the ball (while) going out of bounds was a remarkable thing."
The Patriots were thinking the same thing, too.
"I thought that play they made on our sideline was a phenomenal throw and catch," Brady said. "That got them going."
They got down to the 6-yard line with just over a minute left and the Patriots down to one timeout. New York could have run the clock down to a few seconds and kicked a field goal.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick did the math and decided on a trade-off: Give up a touchdown for some time. New England pulled up and allowed Ahmad Bradshaw to run the final 6 yards with 57 seconds left.
Once Bradshaw realized what was happening, he tried to stop at the 1-yard line to keep the clock going but ended up falling backward into the end zone.
Brady would get one last chance with the Giants defense bearing down on him, as it always does. Defensive end Justin Tuck huddled the New York defense after a touchback on the kickoff left the ball at the 20-yard line.
"I think a lot of guys had their eyes lit up," Tuck said. "This is what we've been working for all year, and we've got 57 seconds left to be world champs."
Brady set a Super Bowl record by completing 16 consecutive passes earlier in the game, topping Montana's record. When he needed several quick completions to get moving in the last minute, he couldn't do it.
The Patriots got only as far as midfield with 5 seconds left. Brady threw a desperation pass into the end zone, where the ball was batted around in a scrum before falling incomplete just beyond the reach of All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski, bringing the spray of confetti from above.
"You come down to one play at the end," Brady said. "If we make it, we're world champs. If we don't, we're wishing we were."
Brady's had a tough time against this Giants defense. During the regular season, it pressured him into mistakes during a 24-20 New York win in Foxborough, Mass. The Patriots went on to win their next 10, a streak that ended when Brady faced that same defense on Sunday.
It just seems to have his number. On his first pass of the game, Brady was pressured by Tuck in the end zone and threw the ball to an open spot downfield to get rid of it, resulting in a safety.
By contrast, Manning didn't make any big mistakes and, again, was at his best under the last-minute pressure.
"He's become confident over time, kind of grew into it," said his father, former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning. "I always felt like you have to experience those situations before you become confident. He's certainly had his share."
And nobody will question anything he says again.
Manning was criticized for insisting before the season that he's an elite quarterback. Then, with the Giants struggling, he was overshadowed by a different Manning drama.
Peyton and the Colts were hoping to reach a Super Bowl in their stadium. Instead, the quarterback had neck operations and the team came apart, prompting ownership to clean house. The week leading up to the Super Bowl was overshadowed in town by talk about Peyton's future.
Eli insisted he wasn't bothered by sharing the spotlight. In the fourth quarter on Sunday, he had it all to himself.
