NASA telescope detects 'bonanza' of humongous black holes

NASA's?Wide-field Infrared Survey telescope has spotted millions of 'supermassive' black holes gorging on matter, says the space agency.?

The cosmic find comes from data collected by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey (WISE) telescope, which scanned the entire sky in infrared light from December 2009 to February 2011. The full catalog of observations by?WISE?during its mission was publicly released in March, and astronomers are still poring through this celestrial trove for discoveries.

"WISE has found a bonanza of?black holes?in the universe," astronomer Daniel Stern of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., said during a news briefing today (Aug. 29). WISE turned up about three times as many?black holes?as have been found by comparable surveys in visible light, offering up a total of 2.5 million new sources across the sky.

These black holes aren't the average tiny, dense objects created by the collapse of dead stars, but rather humongous "supermassive" black holes that have been caught feasting on matter falling into them. Such active black holes are known as quasars, and are some of the brightest objects in the universe, because of light released by the infalling matter. [Photos: Millions of Black Holes Seen by WISE Telescope]

"We expected that there should be this large population of hidden quasars in the universe, but WISE can now identify them across the sky," Stern said. "We think these quasars are really important for shaping how galaxies look today."

Cosmic Hot DOGs

In addition to this haul of gorging black holes, WISE has turned up a smaller population of rarer objects researchers are dubbing "hot DOGs," for hot, dust-obscured galaxies.

These galaxies are thought to be extremely bright, but appear very faint to us because their light is shrouded by dust.

"It is actually the most obscured objects in the WISE sky that are among the brightest objects in the universe," said Peter Eisenhardt, a WISE project scientist at JPL. "They're definitely a different type of beast than we?ve seen before."

The?hot DOGs observed by WISE?number about 1,000, and are mostly spotted from very far away, meaning they existed in the early days of the universe, because their light has taken billions of years to travel to Earth.

Calif. city removes palm trees to appeal to moviemakers

Palm trees in Fillmore, Calif., before they were removed. (Wanda Castel/Fillmore Gazette)

All the tall palm trees that once graced the main street in Fillmore, Calif., have been removed.

But they weren't infected with a pest, nor did they pose a hazard to pedestrians or downtown buildings.

The 20 trees were taken out because the city wanted to have a better shot at being in the movies.

Fillmore doesn't want to look like it's in California. It wants to be seen as any plain downtown in America, reports the Ventura County Star.

The Fillmore Film Commission markets the quaint downtown in the small Southern California city as "Anytown, U.S.A." to be in the movies.

However, as the newspaper reports, some location scouts and movie companies have complained in the past that they have had to edit out the trees?which would look odd if the film were not set in a sunny state?from their productions.

The Fillmore Film Commission has seen its revenue from filming permits drop from $70,000 a few years ago to $10,000 last year, the Star notes in its story. The commission hopes the generic look will boost filming in the city.

The money received from filming permits benefits a number of city agencies, Fillmore Film Commissioner Pat Couse told the Ventura County Star. City police and fire crews who work overtime also earn compensation from filming.

To help market the city's new, treeless look, the film commission sent an email to about 200 location scouts with "before" and "after" pictures of the street.

"The word is out there. They will consider us now," Couse said.

The local chamber of commerce also hopes new filming will revitalize the downtown area, the Star reports.

Some residents voiced opposition in the Fillmore Gazette to the removal of the palm trees.

"Shame on those that voted to cut our lovely palm trees down," Sharon A. Villasenor wrote in the local newspaper. "I have lived in this town all of my life and I can safely say more years than all of the city council combined. You folks come in here like thieves in the night, with little warning to the public, and chop down all our lovely palm trees that have so graciously lined our Central Avenue for over 70 years. ... You have just ruined a beautiful little community that I was once proud to call my home."

Frank Ramirez, owner of the Central Station Bar & Grill, told the Star that he doesn't expect much change in the filming or any extra traffic to local merchants.

"I've been here eight years, and it's been the same," Ramirez said.

Romney targeting former Obama supporters

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? In a presidential campaign filled with sharp criticism, this may be Mitt Romney's softest sell: persuading people who voted for Democrat Barack Obama and now have some buyer's remorse to back the Republican instead.

"We led with our hearts and our dreams that we could be more inclusive than America had ever been, and no candidate had ever spoken so beautifully," former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis of Alabama, who recently switched parties, told the Republican National Convention. "But dreams meet daybreak."

Davis, who seconded Obama's nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Denver in 2008, was the personification Tuesday of a bloc of voters who backed Obama four years ago but who now are disenchanted.

Romney is trying to lure these voters into his fold, and courting them was a theme of the first full night of his national nominating convention.

Republican nominee Romney is taking care not to insult these voters, whose support could be critical in key states where the race is tight. He is gently asking them to reconsider their past support of Obama, if they're not already.

"Ask one more person to join us, who supported President Obama four years ago and didn't get the change they deserved," Romney told an audience in Chillicothe, Ohio, this month.

He featured some of these disillusioned Obama voters in a short video at the convention Tuesday.

Among them: Debbie Smith of Iowa. "As the co-owner of a small business, I'm not supporting Barack Obama this time because I just don't see things getting better," Smith says in the video.

The 51-year-old from Des Moines helped launch Obama on the path to the presidency. The lifelong Democrat supported him in the 2008 Iowa caucuses, which Obama won. The win established him as the Democratic front-runner.

But Smith was unimpressed with Obama's handling of the debate over federal health insurance legislation in 2009 and then came to think he was not taking the growing federal debt seriously.

Like millions of voters in 2008, Smith had hoped in voting for Obama that his call for bipartisanship in a bitterly divided political environment would come to pass. Obama was able to cobble together a coalition of voters that also included disaffected Republicans turned off by the Bush administration's spending patterns.

Smith is not angry, just disappointed in changes she did not expect.

"I don't want to tell people who to vote for," Smith said in an interview. "I just want people to do their homework."

Romney's campaign is hoping to win over people like Smith in battleground states such as Iowa and Ohio, where the race is viewed as very close.

Iowa is symbolic because, after Obama won the caucuses, he carried the state in the general election by 9 percentage points, the biggest winning margin there in a quarter-century.

Romney's hoping he can also lure back those independents and moderate Republicans who walked away from the GOP for Obama.

Iowa is one of seven states where polls show neither Obama nor Romney has a significant advantage. The others are Ohio, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia.

Another member of that voter group Romney's trying to lure is Ashley Bell of Georgia.

The lawyer was an Obama supporter in 2008. His wife, Lauren, was a delegate to the Democratic convention that year.

He said he respected that Obama, as a candidate, opposed requiring all Americans to obtain health insurance, a position he would change in signing the 2010 health care law, which includes a health insurance mandate.

Bell, who is African-American, said he voted for Obama because he viewed the Democrat as a pragmatist. He did not support Obama because he is black, although he was proud to back the first black president.

"We were excited in the moment. And we still have an affinity for the guy," Bell said. "But we had to look at the big picture."

Aides to Obama's campaign declined to comment about the Romney campaign's effort to woo the Democrat's past supporters. But they noted that Davis, who served four terms in the House, voted with Democrats 95 percent of the time before he left Congress in 2010.

Even toughest coral can't cross Pacific

A hardy coral species that can grow to the size of a small building may be tough, but its sturdy larvae rarely make it across a huge swath of deep water that cuts through the Pacific Ocean, researchers have found.

The find that Porites lobata coral almost never crosses the Eastern Pacific Barrier, a trough of deep, open ocean that stretches for 3,350 miles (5,390 kilometers), adds to a long list of evidence that suggests the deep strip of water serves as a kind of biological border, separating species that live in the Eastern Pacific from those that live in the Central Pacific Ocean.

Scientists have found that a host of marine organisms stay on their respective sides of the Eastern Pacific Barrier, yet the recent study, to be published in the journal Molecular Ecology, is the first to take a comprehensive look at how coral species figure into the game.

Lead researcher Iliana Baums, an assistant professor of biology at Penn State University, chose to focus on Porites lobata precisely because it's so tough.

"Compared with other coral species, Porites lobata larvae seem able to survive for longer periods of time; for example, the weeks that are required to travel across the marine barrier," Baums said in a statement.

P. lobatalarvae also possess symbiotic cells that can provide food during a long journey. In addition, the adults seem able to brave more extreme temperatures, as well as more acidic ones, Baums added.

"So if any coral species is going to make it across, it is this one," she said.

Baums and her team collected samples of the coral from both sides of the Eastern Pacific Barrier. Genetic analysis revealed that the populations bore little resemblance to one another.

"This means that coral larvae originating in the Central Pacific simply are not making it across the ocean to the Americas," Baums said.

However, they did find one exception ? a small pocket of central Pacific coral living in an area of the Eastern Pacific near Clipperton Island, a tiny, uninhabited atoll many hundreds of miles southwest of Mexico.

Baums said it's likely that the waters near Clipperton are warmer than much of the Eastern Pacific, thus better re-creating the warm conditions found in the Central Pacific.

"Interestingly, the coral that are lucky enough to cross the EPB to Clipperton Island stay there and don't go any farther," Baums said.

The Effects of Diabetes on the Eyes : : Critical Care 2011

Diabetes and eye defects

A person?s eye illness that develops with diabetes is named diabetic retinopathy and it is maybe the most debilitating of all vision disorders. It occurs when the cells lining the blood vessels from the eye start to decrease in number which then causes hemorrhages and exudates (yellow spots within the retina). This is what?s called background diabetic retinopathy.

In the event the blood vessels tend not to supply enough oxygen on the eye, one?s body responds by growing new blood vessels. These new blood vessels also can cause decrease of sight because they?re fragile and have a tendency to leak blood to the eye. Hemorrhaging into the eye may clear by itself, or it may scarring and resulted in continuing development of a significant condition called retinal detachment.

Macular edema (or macular oedema), another kind of diabetic retionopathy occurs if the macula swells because of excess fluid leaking from underneath the retina.

Background diabetic retinopathy is definitely an early way of the illness that should serve as a danger sign to safeguard your eye area from further deterioration. Background diabetic retinopathy should also be seen as an sign that blood vessels through the entire body are increasingly being damaged. Cataracts can also develop as being a complication of diabetes, particularly the aged.

All of the problems caused by diabetes might not exactly originate from the blood sugar levels level itself, but swings in the blood sugar levels level (high to low) along with the review of the defense mechanisms that the swings cause. Your body is stressed by both quite high and very low levels of blood glucose levels, and also the shock for the cells kills them slowly. People with diabetes should increase their antioxidant bank accounts to stabilize their natural defenses, preserve cells within the retina, and protect the cells inside blood vessels.

Take control of your health

Because the retina can be so metabolically active, diseases like diabetes could possibly be obvious inside the eye before they produce symptoms elsewhere by the body processes. The eyes reflect your current condition. You may never have any eye problems, but if you are diabetic, it is very important have an annual, dilated-eye examination. This belongs to taking control of your own personal health insurance understanding how to mange your disease.

It is advisable to keep in mind that low blood sugar levels, or hypoglycemia, ia another the main wide spectrum of diabetes. Hypoglycemia can occur in those who don?t handle sugar well, this means you will occur in people who eventually be diabetic. If you suffer hypoglycemia, take control you have ever had following a few of the suggestions found here.

Diet management-especially avoiding simple sugars-is useful in diabetes. (Ask any diabetic what are the results after she or he consumes a food like ice cream, candy, and even fruit.) The American Diabetic Association has generated several diets, and have shown to be very useful to diabetics. It can be important to spotlight nutritional balance together with lifestyle adaptation and exercise.

Militants attack Pakistan army post, kill 9 troops

(AP) ? Taliban militants attacked an army post near the Afghan border in Pakistan's northwest, killing nine soldiers, a military official said Wednesday.

The attack occurred in the South Waziristan tribal area, once the main stronghold for the Pakistani Taliban, and was a reminder of the threat posed by insurgents despite numerous military offensives against them.

The military launched a large offensive against militants there in 2009, but insurgents still operate in the area and periodically stage attacks.

In addition to the nine soldiers killed, several others were wounded in the attack on the post near Ghatbadr village in the Shakai Valley, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. The attack started just before midnight and lasted for several hours, he said.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. The group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, claimed they killed 12 soldiers and beheaded some of them.

The differing accounts could not be independently verified.

The military has conducted offensives against the Pakistani Taliban in six of the seven areas that make up Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region along the Afghan border.

The U.S. said recently that Pakistan plans to launch an operation against the Pakistani Taliban in the last major militant sanctuary in region, North Waziristan. But Pakistani military officials have downplayed the comments, saying they plan to slowly increase pressure against militants in North Waziristan rather than launch a sweeping offensive.

Many Pakistani Taliban militants fled to North Waziristan and other parts of the tribal region following the army operation in South Waziristan in 2009.

Stock markets strong in face of headwinds

CNBC's Tyler Mathisen looks ahead to what are likely to be next week's top business and financial stories.

By Reuters

To borrow from "Star Wars", the Force is strong with this stock market.

Despite a ho-hum earnings season and central banks' disappointing hopes for aggressive economic stimulus last week, U.S. stocks held firm.

After four days of losses, the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index rallied on Friday, finishing the week in the positive for a fourth straight time and reaching three-month highs.

Sustaining momentum are valuations that make stocks attractively priced relative to other assets. To be sure, some corporate earnings have been impressive, especially in defensive stocks such as utilities.

The trigger for stocks' surge was the Labor Department report that U.S. employers added 163,000 jobs to their payrolls in July, the most in five months. However, the unemployment rate, based on a different government survey, edged up to 8.3 percent.

Attractive equities
"There's still a fair amount of pessimism, but equities are so much more attractive than bonds that the dividend on Johnson & Johnson, for example, offers a better yield than the company's bonds," said Bruce Zessar, managing director at Advisory Research in Chicago, which oversees about $9 billion.

An investor would do better with the stock than the bond over the next 10 years even if the stock price went nowhere because of the stock dividend, he said.

Based on measures like dividends and price-to-earnings ratios, equities appear cheap compared to other assets like Treasuries where yields on the 10-year note fell to a record low this past month. Stocks are the best house in a bad neighborhood.

After the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank did not take aggressive, immediate measures to spur growth, the market disappointment was fairly short-lived, considering how hotly the actions had been anticipated.

The S&P fell about 0.7 percent on Thursday following the ECB's comments, compared with a nearly 2 percent rise before in anticipation of action.

Momentum 'on our side'
"This indicates that there is near- and long-term momentum on our side, like Wall Street's version of 'May the force be with you,'" said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist for Standard & Poor's Equity Research Services in New York.

In another positive sign, large blocks of upside calls were apparently bought on Friday in an exchange-traded fund designed to measure equity performance in the global emerging markets.

The option flow in the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets fund "seems to express confidence that today's global equity market rally can continue over the next seven weeks," said WhatsTrading.com options strategist Frederic Ruffy.

For last week, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.2 percent, the Nasdaq composite index added 0.3 percent and the S&P rose 0.4 pct. It was a fourth straight week of gains for the Dow and S&P and third for the Nasdaq.

The S&P is up almost 9 percent from an early June bottom and is a mere 2 percent from its 2012 closing high.

Much of that rise has come on gains in defensive sectors like telecommunications, a sign that while investors are not ready to abandon stocks, they're still looking to limit risk and volatility. Telecom shares are by far the strongest performers of the year, surging 18.6 percent, more than double the S&P's 8.5 percent gain for the year.

"It's rare to see gains lead by defensives, but they offer such attractive yields from dividends that even though valuations are stretched, they're likely to get stretched further," said Brad Sorensen, director of market and sector analysis at Charles Schwab in Denver.

In a sign of near-term momentum, 87.5 percent of telecom shares are trading over their 50-day moving average, according to data from Bespoke. Utilities, another defensive group, has almost 98 percent of components above the moving average, compared to 71.8 percent of the S&P at large.

This comes despite an earnings season marked by weak revenue growth and companies that are more negative about their outlooks than they have been 11 years. Still, more than two-thirds of S&P components have topped profit expectations thus far, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Quarterly earnings due this week include Walt Disney Co , Priceline.com and Chesapeake Energy. Results from Macy's Inc and J.C. Penney Co Inc should shed light on the strength of consumer spending.

Planned expat fee is talk of the Cayman tax haven

(AP) ? One among thousands of lawyers, accountants and other workers from around the globe, Paul Fordham is escaping cold weather and the taxman by working in a sunny British territory in the Caribbean. He and many others, however, worry they soon may be looking for another haven.

The Cayman Islands have lost some of their allure by proposing what amounts to the territory's first ever income tax. And it would fall only on expatriate workers like Fordham who have helped build the territory into one of the most famous or, for some, notorious offshore banking centers that offer tax advantages for foreign investment operations.

"The discriminatory nature of the tax has stirred up so much uncertainty for people who moved here thinking they knew what they were getting into," said Fordham, an insurance sector specialist from the London area who moved to the main island of Grand Cayman 6? years ago. His recent attempt to sell his house collapsed because an interested buyer was spooked by the prospect of the islands' first direct tax.

In the seaside capital of George Town, where financial experts in casually elegant clothes unwind over beer or white wine, conversations have been about little else since July 25, when Premier McKeeva Bush declared his intention to impose a 10 percent income tax on expatriate workers as part of an effort to bail the government out of a financial hole.

Bush refuses to call it a tax, preferring instead to dub it a "community enhancement fee." The 10 percent payroll levy, as things stands now, will be imposed Sept. 1 on expatriates who earn more than $36,000 a year.

It's a monumental shift for the territory of 56,000 people where zero direct taxation, friendly regulations and the global money they lured in recent decades helped transform the economy of the island chain, a dependency of Jamaica until 1959, from a reliance on seafaring, fishing and rope-making.

Government data show 91,712 companies were registered as of March 2011. A total of 235 banks, including most of the world's top 50 banks, held licenses at the end of June as did 758 insurance companies. Assets for the registered companies totaled $1.607 trillion last September, down from $1.725 trillion a year earlier.

Bush says the tax is necessary to meet British government demands that the territory diversify its sources of revenue beyond the fees and duties it now relies on, that have left his administration with a budget deficit.

"This is not an us-and-them story, no matter how many screaming headlines call this an expat tax," Bush told a crowd of critics and supporters late Wednesday during a four-hour meeting in a school gym, where each side vented complaints against the other.

Opponents argue that a social contract may have been broken by targeting only the roughly 5,875 expatriates who are paid more than $36,000 a year, saying it could drive some away and hurt the financial services and tourism sectors that are now the pillars of the Caymans' economy. Government reports say a majority of the wealthiest residents are Cayman citizens.

Numerous competing tax havens, from Jersey to the British Virgin Islands, impose income taxes on workers, but not on one sector of the population. Under a controversial "rollover" immigration policy, expatriates in the Cayman Islands already are required to leave the islands for a year after living and working locally for a period of seven years.

Richard Murphy, director of British-based policy consultants Tax Research LLP, thinks fears are overblown that a direct tax on expatriates will cause an exodus.

"The finance industry in Cayman exists to sell to foreigners, and, like it or not, many are heavily invested in Cayman structures. They'll bear the additional price," Murphy said in an email.

But leading businessmen argue that indirect taxes such as work permit fees, stamp duty on real estate deals and duties on imported goods already make the Caymans a relatively pricey place to do business. Work permit fees are typically 5 percent to 15 percent of salary and would remain along with the income tax, raising an expat worker's tax costs to between 20 percent and 30 percent of salary.

Anthony Travers, chairman of the Cayman Islands Stock Exchange, described the tax plan as "probably the single greatest existential threat to the Cayman Islands in over 200 years."

"The whole economic structure in the Cayman Islands has been based on having no direct taxation," he said in a phone interview.

Many people complain that Bush's proposal was made without public consultation and note that it came roughly three years after a government-commissioned report said a payroll tax combined with the work permit fees would make the Caymans less competitive in the market for skilled professionals.

And it's not just finance types who are troubled. At a small beach in downtown George Town, local fishermen gutted glistening jacks and snappers debated the merits of the new tax. They agreed that overspending and excessive hiring by the government was behind the islands' financial difficulties.

"The way I see it, this tax on expats is causing a division in this society and that's not good. It's too much spending by the government that got us here," said fishing boat captain Dennis Downs, sitting next to a table displaying the morning catch.

Bush said he is looking for any feasible alternative for solving the government's revenue problems and rumors are swirling that he may withdraw the tax proposal because of the heated reaction.

On Saturday, he told local TV station Cayman 27 that he was open to recasting the "community enhancement fee" on expats but only "if a solution can be found that does not affect ordinary Caymanians."

Even if it is revoked, some believe damage has already been done.

"It has stirred up so much uncertainty," said Fordham. "It's hard to say if this place could ever be the same."

California Camp | Overcoming Barriers

By Tyler Sullivan, Camp Director

Overcoming Barriers hosted four families in Northern California at the end of June for the High-Conflict Divorce Camp.? Campers and staff traveled from across the country to the Valley of the Moon retreat site with the collective goal of building safe and positive connections between parents and their children.? There was a lot to do in just four short days!

Dining Hall at Valley of the Moon

Upon arrival campers were given the whirlwind introduction to camp including being introduced to staff, touring the site, meeting their bunk-mates and learning some details of the camp schedule.? Dinner and evening activities with assigned seating gave everyone a chance to get to know fellow campers and staff and to begin the process of building the community that would support all of us during the coming days of hard work.

For the next three days we ran a busy camp schedule with the amazing backdrop of mild sunny weather and redwood trees.? After yoga and breakfast Doctors Deutsch, Bailey, Ward and Sullivan led their morning groups, Common Ground teens, Common Ground youth, East parents and West parents respectively, sharing and reflecting on their family experiences both before and during camp.? The morning groups gave campers an opportunity to share their stories and receive feedback from the renowned Overcoming Barriers clinical staff who, at camp, have the unique opportunity to facilitate campers? work toward realizing positive solutions in the safe and supportive camp milieu.

Lunch was served in the dining hall and always featured the ?groove table? where kids ate with their cabin counselors playing games and challenging each other with trivia using their immense knowledge of the natural world (!).? Shortly after finishing lunch we all began afternoon activities which included arts, crafts and sporty activities including clay sculpture, tie dye, press-print painting, swimming, crazy kickball and Can-Jam.? After a little down time to rest and clean up, everyone came together in the field for circle where we made announcements and everyone read aloud the appreciations that had accumulated over the course of the day.? Healthy dinner in the dining hall came next followed by evening activities which included a campfire, movie night and the famous Big Show on the final night of camp where campers and staff showcased their amazing talents, creativity and love for the spotlight.? This year?s Big Show in the Recreation Hall was one for the history books, featuring kids, parents and even a few staff members who had choreographed skits and music acts that kept the audience laughing and on the edge of their seats.

Clay pieces drying

I would like to include a story from camp to help illustrate the challenge facing one child at camp.? As we were preparing a seating chart for an art activity the clinical team suggested I ask one of the children if it was okay to assign them to a table sitting with their ?un-favored? parent (or ?west? parent as they are called at camp).? At first, when I took the child aside and questioned them about the seating chart they refused to answer.? After probing a little deeper the child told me that they were fine with whatever I decided and preferred not to make the decision because, they said, ?if I make the decision it will be a problem.?? I was glad that camp structure was there to support the child in this instance by taking away the responsibility of choice, even if just for a little while, taking them out of the middle of their parents relationship.? The parent and child sat at the same table for the activity accompanied by two staff people and had a nice time.

The last day of camp was as busy as any other.? After breakfast, each morning group met briefly to conclude their shared experience at camp.? Campers and staff spent the next few hours playing games in the field and finishing their art projects while the clinical team met with each family to discuss plans and recommendations for after camp.

One meeting the clinical team facilitated was between a parent and teenager that had not spoken with each other for two years leading up to camp.? The teenager wanted their parent to hear a request they had made two years before and they had the opportunity to present the request at the meeting.? They had their first conversation in two years, the result of which was an agreement to participate in alternate weekly therapy together for six months.? Campers and staff that had gotten to know the two individuals during camp were impressed with their strength and openness to making the most of their time at the Valley of the Moon.

The clinical team was amazed with the amount of work each co-parent team did over the course of camp.? Parents were engaged and impressed everyone, especially their children, with their commitment to making changes for the benefit of their families.? A number of step-parents attended camp and were a huge part of their families? movement at camp and will continue to be instrumental to co-parenting plans moving forward.

We all came together just before departure to have a last camp circle in a patch of shade in the field.? As we shared the last appreciations and played silly games it amazed me to think how far everyone had come in four short days.? After closing, as we gathered ourselves and packed gear into cars, a number of campers commented that they wished they had a few more days at camp, and I think we all felt that way.? I felt very privileged to have been a part of such an amazing group, both campers and staff, who all put their lives on hold for four days, traveled in planes and automobiles to join and share their stories and listen to others with the goal of supporting the kids at camp in having positive relationships with both of their parents.? Their hard work, honesty and willingness to trust each other at camp was inspiring to me and hopefully also to the kids at camp.? Thank you everyone!

Here are a few testimonials submitted by parents:

(pseudonyms chosen by campers)

Geet, age 61, Parent Family #1 (West)

?An incredible experience with great lifetime memories for children and adults.? Cannot envision any other therapeutic setting that offers such a multidimensional approach to helping all family members to address and assist in ?overcoming? the pain and trauma attendant with high-conflict divorce.? A major therapeutic benefit is derived from insightful contact with the other family members.? We all shared common experiences before camp.?

Campers and staff gathered for afternoon circle

Elle Aaye, age 51, Parent Family #2 (East)

?Best medicine for families in crisis.? This camp should be expanded and offered to more families.?

Glen, age 54, Parent Family #2 (West)

?I came to Overcoming Barriers hopeful but skeptical.? I never would have expected so much to happen in four days.? The camp experience opened a whole new possibility for my daughter and for improving my relationship with her.?

Outkast, age 40, Step-Parent Family #3 (West)

?Wow.? What an amazingly talented and compassionate group of staff members.? Each member of our family felt fully supported by skilled professionals at all times and were able to learn and practice new skills in a safe and supportive environment.? Thank you!!?

Thank you!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have supported Overcoming Barriers both through donations, volunteer work and emotional support over the last few years.? The transformations we witnessed at camp this Summer only increased our commitment to providing programs for families in conflict.? Though we are still a very small organization we have plans to expand programming for next year and continue increasing access and awareness within the family courts.? We are currently raising money to enable Overcoming Barriers to provide a range of programs to families with lower incomes and devote resources to training professionals in high-conflict divorce work. ?For more information including how to support please visit the Support OCB page.

Frequent headaches -Daily headaches - Causes | Daily Health ...

Home > Frequent headaches -Daily headaches - Causes

? ? Nearly 5% of the adults suffer from chronic daily or frequent headaches caused by a myriad of factors. In some cases the causes for daily occurrence are not well understood and are idiopathic in nature. Daily or frequent headaches require a medical evaluation. There can be a systemic cause for which the present condition is only a symptom.

Possible causes of frequent and daily headaches

Image: daily frequent headache

? ? One of the cause of frequent episode is the disturbance in the processing of pain signals in the brain. The pain signals may have been interpreted with exaggerated response. Excess caffeine (in tea and coffee), sulfides (in red wine), allergic reactions, defective eye sight, eye strain, chronic ear infections and carbon monoxide poisoning may also cause daily occurrence. The following secondary causes may also be considered during evaluation.

Overdose of medication and rebound effect
? ? In many cases of frequent headaches the cause have been found to be frequent use of pain-killers. Use of analgesics for three days in a week or nine days in a month can cause rebound effect and daily headache. A vicious cycle occurs whereby frequent headaches cause the person to take frequent medication. In such cases treatment becomes difficult as the treatment itself becomes the cause of malady.

Frequent migraine
? ? In people with migraine, the episodes occur 1-3 times a month or less. In some the occurrence becomes frequent or daily. To get over it proper preventive treatment is necessary.

Chronic tension (stress)
? ? People who are prone to tension headaches can slowly develop daily episodes. Tight contractions of muscles in the head, neck and shoulders due to anxiety, stress or lack of sleep usually are the causes. Treating the condition and preventing the underlying cause may bring relief.

New Daily Persistent Headache (NDPH)
? ? Some people, who never had headache of any type suddenly develop persistent daily headache. International Headache Society (IHS) has classified it as a Primary Headache Disorder by the ICHD-2 classification system. NDPH is unique and is continuous daily pain. It may be varying in intensity and very rapidly build up to continuous and unremitting pain. There is no specific treatment for this condition. ?It often does not respond to preventive or abortive medications. In some small studies preventive individual treatments with gabapentin, topiramate and doxycycline have been found to successful.

Sinusitis
? ? The inflammation of sinus (sinusitis) creates pressure and precipitate frequent headaches. Sinusitis due to infections in the sinus. In chronic sinusitis the pain becomes a daily feature and is severe when the affected person bends down. Treating and curing sinusitis with anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics can bring relief from pain.

Traumatic head & neck injuries
? ? If a person suffers from frequent headaches after a head or neck injury, it could be a serious condition. If a sensation of whirling and loss of balance (vertigo) also accompanies then it is an emergency situation requiring thorough medical investigation. There is a great possibility of damage to nerve tissues of the brain or spine.

Meningitis
? ? Persons suffering from meningitis also have daily or frequent headaches. Meningitis is a bacterial infection of the meninges membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. Other symptoms of meningitis are fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, confusion and seizures. The health condition of the patient with meningitis deteriorates quickly requiring immediate medical care. There is also viral meningitis with similar symptoms.

Dehydration
? ? Dehydration, especially chronic dehydration is found the cause daily headaches. As children are more prone to dehydration, they may also suffer from this condition. Over consumption of coffee or alcohol, diuretics, strenuous exercise, antihistamines and calcium channel blockers can cause loss of considerable amount of water and electrolytes from the body. Taking sufficient water will solve this problem. Excess loss of body salts through profuse sweating can also produce this pain and one may have to take sports drinks.

Hormones effects
? ? The monthly fluctuations in the levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones can cause frequent headaches in women. During the menopause frequent headaches are produced as there is fluctuation in the levels of hormones and also there is a drop in the levels of estrogen.

Seek medical help if the daily episode is accompanied by the following symptoms like,

  • getting worse over days,
  • vision changes,
  • nausea or vomiting,
  • numbness and tingling,
  • pain in the ear or eye,
  • confusion or convulsions
  • or pain and stiffness in the neck are present.
? ? Seek medical help and have your frequent headache evaluated. The cause could be an underlying serious health condition.

U.S. woman's altruism starts chain of five kidney swaps, extending lives

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A soon-to-be wed gay couple, a retired teacher and his wife, and two pairs of fathers and sons were among those whose lives were changed one extraordinary day this week when a 35-year-old single mother of four from North Carolina donated a kidney to a stranger in New York.

"I'm not losing nothing," Honica Brittman said this week, sitting in a blue and white hospital gown before surgery in which she would give, for free, the initial kidney in a chain of five kidney transplants at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.

"To actually help somebody live a little bit, a lot longer, that's an awesome thing," she said.

Brittman, who decided to be part of the swap after learning she could not donate to a family friend because of incompatibility, represents what experts say is a critical and growing number of "altruistic" or "non-directed" donors, people willing to donate to anyone in need as long as their blood type, antigens and other factors are compatible.

The health dangers for kidney donors is believed to be low. The risk of death from the surgery is 1 in 1,700, according to the National Kidney Foundation, and life expectancy is said to be unchanged with one kidney.

High blood pressure is a possible side effect, and critics point out there is no systemic collection of national data on the risks associated with living kidney donations.

Experts say donors such as Brittman are key to helping the over 90,000 people awaiting a kidney transplant in the United States, according to the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.

As in Brittman's case, donors can enable a chain of kidney exchanges that increases the number of people who can benefit from live kidney transplants, which typically last longer than cadaver kidneys.

The series of operation on Wednesday and Thursday, which required 10 separate surgical teams and weeks of coordination, was made up of a series of swaps within a group of men and women between the ages of 23 and 68 and with compatible blood types, all motivated by a mix of compassion and commitment to their loved ones.

The chain started with Brittman, who donated a kidney to a 39-year-old television producer whose fianc?e and partner of more than 10 years donated to a businessman from upstate New York.

In turn, the businessman's son, a college-age student who felt that for being healthy and the youngest of four sons, he should step up on behalf of his father and donate one of his kidneys to another young man, a 23-year-old originally from Haiti.

His father then donated to a retired teacher from New Jersey.

"CAN'T WAIT TO MEET THEM"

The operations took place in neighboring rooms with doctors simply walking from one room to another to deliver the small, plump vital organ from the donor to the recipient.

The chain that Brittman made possible ended on Thursday when a woman, the wife of the retired teacher, donated her kidney to another woman who had been waiting four years for a transplant.

"All this stems from the fact that this young woman ... wanted to donate a kidney purely altruistically without knowing any of the recipients," said Lloyd Ratner, a surgeon and director of renal and pancreatic transplantation at the hospital.

Brittman, by giving the first kidney, prevented any pair in the chain from having to donate a kidney before receiving one.

While there is no conclusive national data on the number of donors like Brittman, experts estimate they have increased to between 100 and 200 a year, up from just dozens a few years ago.

"After every chain that gets some publicity, there's a flood of potential donors contacting kidney exchange networks and individual transplant centers," Alvin Roth, an economics professor at the Harvard Business School said.

The chain was also made possible by the decision of another pair in the group to be part of it.

Adam Abernathy, the television producer, and his fianc?e Dave Ferguson, 43, could have done a simple transplant between them because Ferguson's blood type made him a universal donor.

But they decided to be part of a chain when it was proposed by the hospital that Ferguson donate his kidney to a man whose blood type had made him a harder match for a donor, A. Jamal, the businessman and father of four.

"We realized if we were in somebody else's shoes, we'd want someone to do the same," Ferguson said.

Most of the group said they plan to meet their donors after recovering from the operation.

"I can't wait to meet them," Brittman said.

What's Your Excuse for Not Selling Books? ? Heidi M. Thomas

?

Reprinted with permission from Patricia Fry, article appearing in Francine Silverman?s Book Promotion Newsletter.

By Patricia Fry

I?m sorry, but sometimes I get exasperated with authors who make excuses for not promoting their books.

Some of them are known for their aggressive marketing tactics. There are also those who had every intention, BEFORE they finished their book, of presenting a major and ongoing marketing campaign. And then, when opportunities arise to promote their books, they have nothing but excuses as to why they can?t/won?t participate. Wanna hear some of them?

? I don?t have any copies of my book right now. This one still has my head spinning. You should always have copies of your book to sell. How long does it take to get copies from your print-on-demand company or your publisher? Ten days? Two weeks? What were you thinking about when you looked at your box of books and it was getting low? Why didn?t you order books then?before you ran out?

? I had a bad experience last time I did that activity. Well, what makes you think the same thing will happen again?that the same people will be there, that the stars will line up in exactly the same way?

And what can you do to change what happened last time?

? I don?t sell many books when I go there. How many do you sell when you stay home?

? I don?t like crowds. Then, perhaps, you should have hypnosis to get over this phobia or look into another business?like being a mortician.

? I?ll go out and speak only if they pay my expenses. And you have earned your speaking credentials how?

? I don?t like to get up in front of groups. If your book is particularly conducive to live presentations and if you want to sell copies of your book, you?d better find ways to get comfortable with public speaking.

? I don?t want to bother people on my email list with notices about my book award, new Kindle book, upcoming speaking engagement, etc. Helllooooo, your address book should be made up of your readers?your audience?and they should be interested in an occasional notification from you.

? I didn?t know it was up to me to promote my book and I didn?t know how hard it would be. It?s never too late to study the publishing industry, which is what you should have done before you even started writing the book.

Do you make excuses for why you cannot go out and speak, do book signings, sign up for book festivals and so forth? Are your excuses valid or are they just excuses designed to maintain your comfort zone? Think about this. And think about how many books you?ve sold in the last week, month, year. Do you see a correlation between your promotional activities (or lack of) and your book sales?

PFT: Browns reportedly sold for $1 billion

Derrick ColemanAP

If somebody tells Derrick Coleman he doesn?t have much of a shot in Vikings camp, he won?t hear it.

Not because he?s unwilling. Because he can?t.

The undrafted rookie running back from UCLA has the added challenge of being hard of hearing, requiring effort most players don?t have to expend, just to know what play to run.

?I never let it hold me back,? Coleman told Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. ?Not once.?

Coleman was diagnosed with the condition, caused by a missing gene, when he was 3 years old. He wears hearing aids, but any situation with a lot of ambient noise (like a football game), renders them not much help and requires him to read lips. Sometimes in a huddle, that means grabbing the quarterback after a play call to double-check. He told Scoggins he only had three communication problems on the field, and two of them were as a high school freshman.

?I always know what the play is going to be,? he said. ?I don?t move until the ball moves so I shouldn?t have a false-start incident.?

His parents never let him use the condition as a crutch, and to this day he?s become a master at adapting. He wears a pair of skull caps under his helmet; one to keep his hearing aids dry and one to keep them in his ears.

He?s also been willing to talk to hearing-impaired students, trying to erase any stigma bullies might latch onto by pointing out that kids with less-than-perfect sight wear glasses all the time.

?It really serves as an inspiration to those kids because what happens is those kids tend to go into their own shell,? said Coleman?s father, Derrick Sr. ?They think, ?Well, I?m different. I?m not like the other kids.? Derrick helps dispel that.?

Whether he makes the Vikings roster or not, that makes Coleman?s story worth following, and admiring.
